Skip Hire vs. Waste Removal: Which Is Better Value in London?

Skip Hire vs. Waste Removal: Which Should You Choose?
It's the first question most people ask when they've got a pile of rubbish to get rid of. A skip sitting on the driveway feels like the obvious answer — but once you factor in permits, restrictions and the fact that you're doing all the lifting yourself, it's not always the best option.
Here's an honest comparison from a waste removal company. Yes, we're biased — but the numbers speak for themselves.
Cost Comparison
Skip Hire (London 2026 Prices)
| Skip Size | Capacity | Typical Price |
|---|
| Midi (4 yard) | 40–50 bin bags | £280–£350 |
| Builders (6 yard) | 60–70 bin bags | £350–£450 |
| Large (8 yard) | 80–90 bin bags | £450–£550 |
Plus:
Waste Removal (Our Prices)
| Load Size | Roughly Equivalent To | Price |
|---|
| Half load | Midi skip | From £200 |
| Full load | Builders skip | From £350 |
No permit, no waiting, no loading it yourself.
Speed
**Skip:** You book it, wait 2–5 working days for delivery, fill it yourself over however long it takes, then wait another 2–5 days for collection. Total time: often 1–2 weeks.
**Waste removal:** We can be there the same day or next day. The job takes 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the size. Total time: hours, not weeks.
If you're working to a deadline — a tenancy ending, a sale completing, a builder starting — speed matters.
Convenience
**Skip:** You load it. Every bag, every broken chair, every bag of rubble. If it's upstairs, you carry it down. If it's in the garden, you carry it through the house.
**Waste removal:** We do all the lifting. From any room, any floor. We've carried three-seater sofas down four flights of stairs in Islington townhouses. That's what we're here for.
What You Can and Can't Dispose Of
This is where skips have a real disadvantage. Most skip companies won't accept:
With a waste removal service, we take almost everything. Fridges, mattresses, mixed builders waste, garden waste, electrical items — it all goes on the truck and we sort it at the other end. The only things we can't take are asbestos and certain hazardous chemicals.
Permits and Parking
If you don't have off-street parking (a driveway or front garden), the skip has to go on the road. That means you need a permit from the council, and in London that's not cheap:
The permit process takes 3–5 working days. Some boroughs won't issue permits for certain streets at all.
With waste removal, we park the truck, load up and leave. No permit needed. Even in controlled parking zones, we rarely need more than 30–60 minutes.
When a Skip Is the Right Call
We'll be honest — there are times when a skip makes more sense:
For a builder doing a two-week renovation, a skip on the driveway is hard to beat.
When Waste Removal Wins
For most one-off clearances, waste removal is the better option:
The Verdict
For most domestic jobs in London, a man-and-van waste removal service is faster, easier and the same price or cheaper than a skip once you factor in permits, loading time and restrictions.
The exception is long building projects where you need something on-site for days or weeks.
